Back in 1954, Max Hoffman, the USA importer of Porsche urged the German factory to make an open, fair weather car for
the West Coast. The "Speedster" was born and was an immediate success.
Now, in 2011, one can still experience the thrill of driving a Speedster
without the expense or any of the other drawbacks associated with owning an original.
We here at the BECK factory have been making high quality, hand-made Speedster and Spyder 550 replicas for nearly 30 years.
Beck products have earned the respect of all of the worlds major automotive magazines, including Car & Driver, Motor Trend,Road & Track, European Car and many more. All BECK products incorporate standard features such as a 3" DOM tubular steel chassis, disc brakes, full leather interior, hand-laid glass, Sikkens paint and a beautifully fit convertible top and side curtains. We build each and every BECK product with pride in our craftsmanship, and it shows.
Spyder 550S (Shown in custom Sun Burst Yellow)
The Beck Spyder 550S keeps the basic design and spirit of the classic, air cooled Spyder 550. Under the rear clam shell is fitted a more modern, 2.5 liter Subaru flat 4, water cooled engine. This provides the advantages of a computer controlled, fuel injected engine that develops more that 170hp without modification.
Classic Chamonix Spyder 550 (Aircooled)
In 1953, Porsche presented the 550 at the Paris Auto Show. The success of this car as a racer is partially responsible for the commercial success of Porsche. Weighing a mere 1213 lbs, the Spyder was referred to as "the little giant killer"and was a force to be respected on any racetrack. The Spyder 550 cemented its place in history when actor James Dean was killed while driving his 550 though California.
The Beck 550 Spyder is a high quality reproduction that is honest to the concept and detail of the original. The 3" tube-frame is a close replica of the original Spyders. The original aluminum body gives way to the advantages of a 100% hand laid fiberglass body. The BECK 550 combines world class handling, open air motoring, and a sense of freedom normally associated with a motorcycle for a surprisingly moderate price. The BECK 550 is a driver's car and was once aptly described by Car & Driver as "the closest thing you'll find to motorized sneakers".
